How Do Parents Know If Panic Attacks Are Normal or Abnormal?

Generally, a panic attack is not normal; true attacks are indicators of severe anxiety. However, if your child or teen has a few isolated incidents of anxiety triggered by environmental stressors, but they don’t resurface, there is no reason to be alarmed. It suggests the tendency is there, but if the attack is brief in duration and the child or teen tolerates the anxiety well, the likelihood of continuous panic attacks is not necessarily expected. Compassion is warranted, of course, but not undue worry or hasty action. However, keep in mind that predisposition to anxiety, and be alert for any further symptoms that do result in increased distress for your child or teen.
